Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based practice that is led by the therapist rather than the child. CBT helps children recognize negative thoughts and identify when and where those thoughts are negatively impacting their life. The sessions are designed to teach problem solving techniques, coping skills, and replace negative thoughts with more positive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. CBT encourages collaboration between the child, therapist, and family.
Activities designed to practice these skills will be assigned to the child between sessions. This reinforces your child’s awareness of their feelings, thoughts, and actions so that they can learn to redirect their responses.
Over the course of therapy, parents typically report a noticeable reduction in their child’s anxiety and depression symptoms, improvements in emotional regulation and behavioral functions, and a drastic increase their child’s ability to use coping strategies.
